The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini, is a story about a wealthy Pashtun child named Amir who has a Hazara servant, Hassan. The two share a friendship, and their fate is a tale of love and loss. The book contains many ideas and thoughts that will provoke thought. One thing that readers can learn about is courage. This idea is shown repeatedly throughout the book. The book shows how people need courage and determination to bring about change.

It takes courage to protect another person, or you could fail. Hassan decides to defend Amir in The Kite Runner. Assef has been picking on Amir. He confronts him and overcomes his fears. “You’re correct, Agha. It’s possible that you did not notice I’m holding the gun. You’ll be renamed “One-Eyed Assef” if you move. (Hosseini 45) Hassan stood up and protected Amir. His loyalty and friendship is stronger than any fear. Hassan, not only did he protect Amir’s Amir’s Kite after the tournament but he knows the importance and value of it. Even when Assef tried to bully him he held on to the kite and told Assef that Amir was his friend. Hassan might be afraid, but his courage and his friendship are more important than his fear.

It takes courage to confront the past, which is filled with regrets and shameful memories. Amir’s nightmare is what happened to Hassan. He tries to ignore it, but as he gets older and returns to Afghanistan to see Rahim Khan he decides to confront the past. Amir tells us that he is ready to face his past. He says, “I don’t wanna forget anymore” (263) Everyone is slave to the past. You can’t move on from the past, no matter how hard you try. It will always be there, in an unforgiving corner of your mind, waiting to come back. Face it was a very difficult task. Amir went after Sohrab to tell him about Hassan. Amir realizes that he may run away from the past as much as he likes, but he will never be able to forget it. In order to find Sohrab and redeem his sins, Amir sought the support of his friends and family. It took courage for him to act. People find it difficult to confront the past. It’s hard to face your past.

Do you think it takes courage to stand up against someone who is more powerful than you are? When you are facing someone stronger than yourself, that is not courage. Baba fights for the woman being sexually assaulted in the Russian soldier’s truck by Amir. Baba was standing up. Baba grabbed his leg and snatched it away. The moonlight was eclipsed when he stood. Baba told him to ask the man a question. “I want you to ask this man something,” Baba said. “Ask his where is his shame?” (121). Amir had originally planned to bag it, but then he remembered how jealous he was of Hassan for his bravery. Assef had given up, and made a promise to Hassan. It was now my turn. He understands that regretting past mistakes will never solve any problems. Assef is his enemy and he’s no longer afraid. When you face someone more powerful than yourself, it’s difficult because you are aware that there may be danger or failure. The courage and pluck you gained from those tough situations will help you become stronger mentally.

Finally, people can’t make changes without being brave and confident. They need to have the courage to implement improvements on a regular basis to avoid disappointment. In the book The Kite Runner, it was clearly shown that to make changes, you need courage. You have to face your past, be strong enough to fight someone bigger than yourself, protect others and even change the future. In the end, we will discuss what courage is and how to acquire it.
